International Journal of Cancer as on October 20, 2006 – According to the latest research and study conducted by Italian “Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche” associates, a diet high in refined cereals, bread in perticular is related with an enhanced risk of renal cell carcinoma (RCC), one of the major type of kidney cancer.
According to Dr. Francesca Bravi and associates in the International Journal of Cancer claimed that diet and nutrition are thought to play a role in the development of RCC, but the effect of specific food groups on the risk of this malignancy is controversial.
Dr. Francesca Bravi from Mario Negri in Milan, and associates used food frequency questionnaires to find a relationship between diets of 767 patients with RCC in the 2 years prior to diagnosis to other 1534 ‘controls’ who were admitted to the same hospitals for acute, non-cancer disorders.
If highest with the lowest intakes could be compared, eating bread increased the risk of RCC by 94 percent, pasta and rice by 29 percent, and milk and yogurt by 27 percent.
One the other hand, high intake of processed meat, poultry, and green leafy vegetables are supposed to reduce the risk by 36 percent, 26 percent, and 35 percent, respectively.
“To our knowledge, no other study investigated the role of cereals on RCC,” the researchers claimed.
