The Seriousness of Colon Cancer

The colon is the area in our digestive system where the waste matter is stored. The rectum is the end part of the colon just close to the anus. Together they form the large intestine in our body system. Tumors grow in the inner walls of the intestine. Benign tumors of our large intestine are known as polyps. The malignant tumors are known as cancer.

Benign tumors do not spread to other areas of the body or enter into other tissues. They can be removed during colonoscopy and do not cause any harm to our life. In case these are not removed then they turn cancerous. Cancerous tumors spread to other parts of our body. The spreading of these tumors is called metastasis of the colon cancer. Once this metastasis has occurred in the colorectal cancer, then it is unlikely that the cancer will be cured.

Colorectal does not spread from person to person, in other words it is not contagious. Some people are at a greater risk of developing cancer.
