What is hair made of and throw some light on its structure?

Well, this is very basic question and I wanted to know as to what is the major constituent of hairs. Could someone also tell me something about the structure of the hairs.

    Hairs are made up of protein called as keratin. This keratin contains 21 different types of amino acids. Each hair strand is made up of medulla, cortex and cuticle. Cuticle is the outer layer of the hairs and they are in the forms of layer above each other. Hairs look shiny when these layers are even. Three quarter of hair shaft is made up of the middle layer known as cortex. The core of the hair shaft is termed as medula.
