    Sunscreen allergy is the adverse reaction of sunscreen lotions and creams. These lotions and creams are applied on the skin, thus allergy to skin manifests as contact dermatitis. Red, scaly skin with patches and blisters are some of the symptoms of sunscreen allergy. In this article we discuss what is sunscreen allergy and its symptoms.

    Sunscreens are used to protect the skin from harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun and are used especially in summer. They are applied for cosmetic and health reasons.

    In the present situation, everyone can recognize the dangers of sun exposure. The ozone layer is depleting day by day and the harmful effects are becoming more and more apparent. As a result, sunscreens are becoming indispensable commodities of daily lives.

    Sunscreens are made of chemicals like oxybenzone and benzophenone which are very harmful for the skin. According to the study conducted by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), 84% of sunscreens and sunscreens products are harmful to health.

EWG group gives the answer as follows: “Because the greedy corporations selling the toxic sunscreen products don’t want the FDA to study the safety of their products”

    Sunscreen allergy manifests as contact dermatitis. Here are a few symptoms of contact dermatitis which come up when skin is in contact with harmful chemicals of sunscreens:

    • Redness of the skin
    • Dry, cracked skin
    • Skin blisters
    • Itchy skin patches
    • Swelling of the skin
    • Sometimes it is severe itching of the skin

    These allergic symptoms take some time to show up. They generally spread to the areas surrounding the affected areas. One needs to consult a doctor immediately upon seeing these symptoms.
