    Weight Loss and Hormones

suryaBy suryaJune 22, 2010002 Mins Read

You may be shocked to hear the fact that your hormones have a say on your weight. Hormones such as insulin, testosterone, progestrone and estrogen play a significant role on your weight. Hormone imbalance is connected with weight gain. This is because hormones have an effect on body metabolism and weight. This article reveals how weight loss is related to hormones.

    Weight Loss and Hormones
Hormones have many functions such as influencing the immune system, making the body ready for menopause, parenthood and puberty, and controlling the reproductive system. Therefore, hormones can inhibit or stimulate growth. Menopause leads to weight gain in many women. Hormonal levels differ every day, affecting your mood and energy levels. But, hormonal levels depend on one’s lifestyle and level of activity.

    Testosterone Changes
When men start becoming less active, there is a lowering of testosterone levels in the blood. This hormone boosts metabolism and helps to lower fat levels. So, declining testosterone levels can lead to weight gain. Thus, lifestyle changes can affect testosterone levels, leading to fat gain or loss. On the other hand, an active lifestyle boosts hormone levels and metabolism. Thus, exercise leads to weight loss.

    Weight Loss and Growth Hormones
Growth hormones play the role of strengthening your cartilage, ligaments, tendons and bones. They play an important part while exercising. These hormones lower glucose use and increase fat use during exercise. This reduces body fat and enables one to train for longer periods. Aerobic and other intense exercises trigger the pituitary gland to release more growth hormones.

    Weight Loss and Estrogen
Estrogen is found in high levels in women’s blood. This hormone breaks down fat to use it as fuel. It also increases metabolism, elevates mood and one’s libido. During menopause, the ovaries produce lesser amounts of estrogen. Exercise increases estrogen levels.

    Weight Loss and Other Hormones
There is a similar relationship between weight loss and other hormones. Endorphins, thyroxine, epiphrine and insulin also play their part in weight loss. The duration and intensity of exercises have a proportional effect on the quantity of hormones released by the glands. Therefore, a healthy and active lifestyle is the need of the hour to boost the levels of hormones, which in turn can lead to weight loss.
