    The terms “obesity” and “overweight” refer to an individual’s body weight. Also, it specifies whether the body weight is too high. Obesity is the high amount of excessive body fat a person can have. On the other hand, overweight is the additional body weight from fat, bone, muscle or water. Body mass index (BMI) is the most important and effective measuring tool for obesity and overweight. Read on to have an overview of obesity and overweight.

    The body mass index (BMI) is based on weight and height of an individual. It is used for children, teens and adults. Millions of Americans are either obese or overweight. Being either of the two puts you at a higher risk in acquiring diseases. There is a more likelihood to develop a disease, if you have more amount of body fat and you weigh more.

    Associated Diseases of Obesity
    These diseases which are associated with obesity and overweight include:

    • Specific cancers
    • Respiratory disorders
    • Gallstones
    • Type 2 diabetes
    • High blood pressure
    • Coronary heart disease

    Many factors are responsible for your weight. Factors such as habits, behavior, metabolism rate, genetics, family history, and environment play a key role in your weight gain or loss. Some of the factors like family history are irreversible. But factors like lifestyle habits can be changed and manged accordingly.

    Prevention of Obesity and Overweight
    You can take preventive measures to treat obesity or overweight. By simply following a healthy diet and keeping a check on your calories intake, you can successfully manage your weight. Also, regularly do physical activity to stay fit and healthy. You should minimize the amount of time when you are inactive.

    Several weight-loss surgery and medicines are available for those individuals who need to lose weight when a mere change in the lifestyle is not adequate.
