    Eye Allergy Treatment

    Eye allergy means that some allergen causes symptoms in your eyes. It may be itching, swelling, watering or drying. This article will explain what can be done with eye allergy symptoms and let you know what the best eye allergy treatment is.

    Treatment for Eye Allergies

    – Avoid the triggers of allergy
    The best way to avoid symptoms of allergy is to avoid the allergen. With eye allergens, it should be borne in mind that rubbing the eyes is a physical trigger that can aggravate symptoms.

    – Topical antihistamines and decongestants
    Topical antihistamines are used as eye drops. They are dropped on the eyes to counteract the histamines that are causing the reaction in the conjunctiva of the eye. They are good in relieving itching in the eye, but they are less effective in stopping redness and swelling. Decongestants are better in relieving redness but do not provide relief with itching. They are not preferable method with allergic eye treatment.

    – Topical mast-cell stabilizers
    These relieve inflammation by blocking chemical mediators of inflammation from the mast cells. This is a good way to relieve eye allergy symptoms and they usually work within minutes.

    – Anti inflammatory drugs
    These are highly affective for eye allergies but they are reserved only for severe symptoms because of strong side effects like pressure in the eye and cataracts.

    – Systemic medications
    Oral antihistamines can be used but are not preferable because they cause drowsiness and dryness in the eyes.

    – Allergy shots
    This is also called immunotherapy. It involves exposing you to the allergen in small doses in order to build up a tolerance for it.

    Remedies for Eye Allergies

    – Tear substitutes can help in getting rid of dryness
    – Cold compress can alleviate symptoms
    – Use cold eye drops because they are more soothing

    These are the most used remedies and treatment options for allergies and the eyes. Eye allergy treatment is well worth it, if it means that you get relief from eye allergy symptoms that affect the quality of your life.
