    What is Shortness of Breath?

    Shortness of breath is a condition that creates difficulty to breathe properly. It reduces the oxygen level in the body. It is a situation where the person feel uncomfortable and not getting sufficient air to inhale. Shortness of breath is also known as difficulty breathing or dyspnea.

    Some of the health problems which create shortness of breath are obesity, deconditioning, obstruction in the airways, panic attacks, allergies, chest wall compression, dust filled environments, ascent to high altitudes and lack of regular exercises.

    The primary causes of shortness of breath are:

    • Anaphylaxis
    • Heart attack
    • Pneumonia
    • Congestive heart failure
    • Chest injuries
    • Pulmonary embolism
    • Carbon monoxide poisoning
    • Collapsed lung

    Shortness of Breath Symptoms

    There is no specific definition for shortness of breath. It is identified through the various signs and symptoms which can be varied from person to person.

    The primary shortness of breath symptoms are:

    • Breathing through mouth
    • Difficulty to speak
    • Breathing fast
    • Increased heart beat
    • Weakness
    • Sitting and resting with hands on both knees
    • Breathing with the help of neck and chest muscles

    Shortness of breath can occur with mild chest pain. It can be a dangerous combination when chest pain accompanies difficulty breathing.

    Shortness of Breath Treatment

    Shortness of breath is self curable in majority of the cases. It may last for a long time or it may get cured within a short time. It is a health condition that has to be taken seriously.

    Shortness is a condition which needs quick medical attention. It can be harmless or harmful to the health of the person. The situation may go beyond control if ignored. It is advisable to undergo a thorough medical check up to find out the irregularities and to get the right treatment option.

    Emergency medical service has to be used in the case of emergency to get rid of the serious difficulty breathing.
