    Working of Antibiotics:
    Antibiotics stop or slow the growth of bacteria. In some cases, these antibiotics kill bacteria.

    Why Antibiotics are Used?
    Experts suggest not to use antibiotics for bronchitis, if you do not have any other health problems. Physician prescribes antibiotics based on the type of infection you suffer from, any other health problems you have, your age and the complications of bronchitis, like pneumonia.

    How Well do Antibiotics Work?
    According to the reports of researchers done on antibiotics and bronchitis:

    • Antibiotics reduce cough slightly, but many people suffering from bronchitis recover without using antibiotics.
    • Antibiotics are not effective on people suffering from common cold, but does not have the symptoms of pneumonia.

    Side Effects of Antibiotics:
    Various antibiotics have different side effects. The following are some common side effects:

    • Vomiting
    • Nausea
    • Sore mouth
    • Vaginal yeast infection
    • Dizziness and headache
    • Sunburn or increased sensitivity to sun
    • Skin rash
    • Diarrhea
    • Upset Stomach

    Recent study have shown that people who use erythromycin along with other medications have higher risk of sudden cardiac death. The study also revealed that risk of cardiac death is more when erythromycin is combined with other medications which inhibit some liver enzymes – like some antidepressants, antifungal medications and calcium channel blockers – than when these are not taken together.

    What To Think About Antibiotics?
    Antibiotics benefits for bronchitis are less and should be compared to the risk and side effects and also possibility of antibiotic resistance.

    Use antibiotics according to the directions of the doctor. Use these medications as a course and do not stop them as you feel better. Antibiotics are not effective on smokers when compared to non-smokers.
