    Pharmacological research till now demonstrated that drugs with anticholinergic effects such as- sedating antihistamines, antispasmodics, neuroleptics, phenothiazines, skeletal muscle relaxants, tricyclic antidepressants, disopyramide- may have additive effects when used in combination.

    Excessive parasympathetic effects result in following medical conditions:

    • Paralytic ileus (temporary paralysis of a portion of the intestines)
    • Hyperthermia
    • Heat stroke
    • Anticholinergic intoxication syndrome

    The associated symptoms of intoxication commonly include the following:

    • Mydriasis
    • Blurring of the vision
    • Puffy face
    • Fever
    • Dry skin and mucous membranes
    • Tachycardia
    • Urinary retention
    • Constipation

    Central symptoms include the following:

    • Loss memory
    • Dementia
    • Loss of Cognition
    • Disorientation in gait
    • Incoherence of speech

    • Ballistic movements (Jerks and twitches)
    • Stereotype behaviour
    • Seizures

    The elderly people and the patients suffering with organic brain disease are more vulnerable for depressant effects involving the central nervous system. This increases surgically when these drugs are given in combination. Using two neuroleptics at the same time or a neuroleptic along with an anticholinergic drug may increase the risk of tardive dyskinesia.

    Ambulatory patients should be counselled to avoid focussed and stressful activities as a precautionary measure.

    In case of persisting adverse effects anticholinergic medication must be given.
