    Are Smoking and Acute Urinary Retention Related?

    Acute urinary retention is the inability to urinate suddenly.The urination involves pains and discomfort.Latest studies have found a relation between smoking and Acute Urinary retention.This article tries to gain further insight.

    Facts about Acute Urinary Retention:

    • It is caused by blockage,damage or cancer of the bladder,growth of the prostrate or by usage of drugs and medicines.
    • Symptoms of this disease are difficult and painful urination at night,feeling of incomplete urination,pink or red color urination etc.
    • There are 221 known conditions which can cause such problem.
    • Depending on the cause of the problem,the treatment commences.

    What the Latest Study Involved?

    • The study was conducted in the Department of Urology, University of Michigan Medical School, Ann Arbor, Michigan.
    • 2,089 men were selected within the age group of 40-79 years.
    • They were asked to fill a questionnaire related to the symptoms of the disease and the status of their smoking.
    • The statistical technique of “Proportional hazard models” was used to arrive at a conclusion.

    What the Study Revealed?

    • Current smokers were at lower risk than the non-smokers.
    • The risk of former smokers was found to be same as that of the non-smokers.
    • This study found out that current smokers are at a modestly reduced risk of Acute Urinary Retention.

    Facts to remember:

    • This study could not found anything conclusive about the relation between smoking and this disease.
    • However,Smoking is known to be major reason for bladder cancer which causes Acute Urinary Retention.
    • That is why,further studies are required in this area to arrive at any conclusive.
    • It is in the best interest of the smokers to quit smoking.
    • Avoiding alcohol,spicy foods and drinking plenty of water are be beneficial to stay away from this disease.
