    Marijuana’s Effects on Fertility

suryaBy suryaAugust 15, 2010002 Mins Read

There are many ramifications due to marijuana use that have been hotly debated. Both pro- and anti- marijuana lobbies have come up with many reasons to support their cause. In this article, we reveal the effects that marijuana has on fertility.

    Reduced Sperm Count
Research has revealed that marijuana can lower sperm count in men. But, the effect is seemingly temporary. The reduction in men’s sperm count due to marijuana use is about the same as due to consuming alcohol.

    Eager Sperm
A research study reveals that the sperm of habitual marijuana users activates immediately, thus burning out before it reaches the fallopian tube. This study has received a lot of publicity. This trait of the sperm would lessen its efficacy. Thus, marijuana does affect the fertility of the male consumer.

    Bonding Issues
Certain studies suggest that the sperm of marijuana users may find it difficult to bond with the female egg. This factor would definitely hinder pregnancy. This research has been proved to be correct in monkeys.

Heavy Marijuana Use can Affect Fertility
Studies reveal that heavy use of marijuana can indeed affect fertility. Heavy use can weaken sperm, lower the sperm count and reduce its efficacy. But, there is no overwhelming evidence that heavy marijuana use can lead to permanent infertility, in men or women.

    Marijuana’s Effect on Male Fertility
Marijuana reduces the amount of seminal fluid. THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, causes this effect. But, as discussed earlier, marijuana’s effect on male fertility is not permanent. It can be reversed by stopping marijuana use.

Thus, the more you smoke marijuana, the greater is the damage to the sperm. Besides, marijuana increases estrogen levels. As a result, the sperm count becomes abnormal and the mobility of the sperm is also affected. Marijuana may also lower the antioxidant property of seminal fluid, thus negatively affecting the sperm.

    Marijuana’s Effect on Female Fertility
Marijuana’s impact on female fertility or the fetus is not known. But, women are not advised to use drugs of any sort, especially during pregnancy. Pregnant women who use marijuana can give birth prematurely. Such babies may be born with lower than normal body weight.
