    10 Major Diseases and its Ayurvedic Treatments

    Have a Look at 10 Major Diseases and its Ayurvedic Treatments

    1. Asthma

    Ayurveda suggests Pancha Karma therapy for asthma. Depending on the extent of the disease, the treatment differs from patient to patient.

    Suggested treatment for those who are prone to asthmatic attacks are steam fomentation and oil massage.

    2. Back pain

    This is a most common problem during the middle ages among both the sexes. This may be due to different causes.

    Depending on the cause behind the back pain, Ayurveda suggests Pancha Karma Therapy along with Kundalini Massage and oral herbal supplementation.

    3. Headache

    There can be several reasons behind headache such as cold and flue, tension, indigestion and constipation. There are headaches of Vata, Pitta and Kapha types.

    The suggested treatments are:

    • Abhyanga (Massage to head, neck and foot)
    • Swedana ( Sweating methods)
    • Lepan (Applying herbal pastes)
    • Virechana (Purgation)

    4. Sinusitis

    Exposure to cold and rain, allergy to different objects like dust and pollen grain are the different causes for Sinusitis.

    The main Pancha Karma procedures are oil massage, medicated vomiting, medicated smoking and gargling. Most important treatment in this section is Nasya ( medication through nostrils).

    5. Obesity

    The excessive weight can lead to several other diseases. So it will be better if one controls the excessive weight during the right age.

    Depending on the composition of one’s body, different Pancha Karma treatments are suggested for obesity. Along with this diet control and simple exercises should be followed.

    6. Rheumatism

    Stiffness and swelling in joints and bones are the symptoms of Rheumatism.
    Samsarjana Karma fasting is suggested to remove the toxins from the body. At this stage, drinking hot water is also encouraged. These methods are followed by Kanji Dhara (a poultice type of sudation).

    7. Depression

    According to Ayurveda, the cause of depression is an imbalance in Vata.

    The Pancha Karma treatment for this includes:

    • Abhyanga (body massaging)
    • Shiro Dhara (constant stream of medicated liquid over forehead)
    • Vamana (emesis)
    • Virechana (purgation)
    • Nasya (medication through nostrils)
    • Shiro Lepan ( applying herbal pastes over forehead and scalp)

    8. Hypertension

    This is commonly observed among middle aged people. Sometimes this can be an early symptom of heart disease.

    The prescribed treatment is Abhyanga or whole body oil massage.

    9. Psoriasis

    Psoriasis affects skin and joints and it causes red, scaly patches to appear on the skin.

    Proper oleation and little perspiration followed by medicated purgation is what Ayurveda suggests for Psoriasis. Some times blood letting is also used.

    10. Heart diseases

    Heart diseases are a major health problem. Ayurveda suggests preventive measures as well as treatments for this.

    Ayurveda prescribes a vegetarian diet as well as suggests avoiding coffee and cigarette. This is followed by simple regular exercises and meditation. There are Pancha Karma treatments as well as herbal medicines used for treatment purposes.
