    Chebulic Myrobalan Health Benefits

    Chebulic myrobalan is a popular remedy for various diseases in Ayurveda. It is known as Haritaki or Harad in Sanskrit. Chebulic myrobalan is one of the ingredients of famous Ayurvedic preparation Triphala. Hence, the herb is widely used in treatment of various diseases such as dysentery, diarrhea, flatulence, heart burn, dyspepsia, spleen and liver disorders.

    Chebulic myrobalan’s fruit contains an astringent substance which is due to chebulinic acid. It is also rich in tannic acid, resin and gallic acid etc. Some health benefits of chebulic myrobalan are discussed here in this article.

    Medicinal Benefits of Chebulic Myrobalan
    Following are some of the health benefits of Chebulic myrobalan:

    • Acidity — Juice of Chebulic myrobalan is used in treatment of heartburn and acidity. Its juice when taken after meals, help neutralize the acidity in stomach. Its juice is mixed with amla juice for better results.
    • Constipation — The herb is a mild laxative and thus it is beneficial in constipation. Pulp of 2 to 3 fruits should be taken with rock salt. Decoction of 4 to 6 fruits can be taken with cinnamon and clove at bed time for relief from constipation.
    • Dysentery — The herb Chebulic myrobalan is an excellent remedy for dysentery and diarrhea. For relief from these conditions, 4 grams of pulp should be taken with clove and cinnamon.
    • Mouth Inflammation — Its diluted decoction should be used as a gargle to treat mouth inflammations. Dry fruit powder of this herb should be applied directly on the paining tooth.
    • Skin Disorders — Chebulic myrobalan is used to treat various skin conditions such as ulcers, burns and chronic wounds.
    • Piles — The herb is also an excellent cure for piles.
    • Asthma — This herb is also used to cure asthma. One piece of fruit should be chewed every night to help reduce the asthma conditions.
    • Eyes Problems — The decoction of herb is used as an eye wash, which helps in reducing eye congestion, inflammation and swelling.
    • Hair Tonic — Chebulic myrobalan is used as a hair tonic. Oil prepared by boiling fruit paste in coconut oil till it mixes in the oil completely. This oil should be applied on hair which helps blacken the gray hair and gives it vitality.

    The above are some of the health benefits of Chebulic myrobalan. Its use by pregnant women should be avoided as it can lead to abortion.
