    How to Get Enough Vitamins after a Gastric Bypass?

    You will not be able to absorb vitamins as well as you used to do before Gastric Bypass.Small intestine is the place where we absorb most of our minerals and vitamins.Because the small intestine has been bypassed, we are not able to absorb the vitamins. In this situation, we need to pay attention and intake as much nutrition possible for the rest of your life.

    Always remember that there are no right or wrong nutrition supplement but you need to intake that supplement regularly. You need to choose age and gender specific formula. Women need more calcium and iron than compared to men. Look for those supplements which are rich in vitamins and minerals and which are good for your health.

    Vitamins need to take after Gastric Bypass are as follows:-

    • Eat variety of healthy food such as fruits,vegetables and whole grains. You must be aware that you won’t get enough vitamin from food alone.
    • You can take multivitamin supplement which provides 200% of the vitamins and minerals which has been recommended.Before buying it, read the label on the multivitamin bottle to make sure that you are getting enough vitamin.
    • Doctors believe that chew able vitamins are more effective. So take more chew able and liquid vitamins.
    • Children’s multivitamin will not provide enough vitamins and minerals that you require.So do not intake children’s multivitamin.They may even contain vitamin A which is not good for you to absorb.
    • You can take iron with vitamin C to increase the absorption.Avoid eating dairy products or calcium supplements.
    • You can take B12 supplement.After gastric bypass you will lack intrinsic factor in your stomach. So intake of B12 supplement will help you to absorb food that you will eat. It becomes important to take B12 supplement with multivitamin because multivitamin may not contain enough B12 supplement.
    • Intake of calcium citrate (1500-2000 mg) will also be helpful. Do not take calcium carbonate.You can take your calcium with vitamin D in order to increase the absorption.
    • Getting regular blood test after Gastric Bypass will help you to know that whether you are taking enough vitamins or minerals. It is recommended to go for a blood test after 3 months,6 months,9 months and after one year.
