Have you ever wondered why your doctor tells you to follow an exercise regimen when you follow a diet plan? According to a new study, doing exercise while dieting helps in preventing weight regain. Exercising minimizes appetite and also burns your fat before carbohydrates. If fat is burned first and carbohydrates are stored for later use, then it slows the process of weight regain. This also helps in reducing overeating.

This was published in the American Journal of Physiology – Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology. The findings also reported that exercise reduces the development of new fat cells which occur during the process of weight regain. Read on to know more about how exactly exercise works to prevent weight regain.

    How Exercise Works?
Weight gain occurs when the number of calories consume exceeds the number of calories expended. The physiological signals responsible for arousing or suppressing our appetite is mainly influenced by lifestyle, cognitive and psychological factors. However, after dieting, these physiological signals plays a key role in controlling the food intake.

One of the most common problem of weight regain is feeling hungry after losing weight by following a restricted diet plan. Many individuals curb under this physiological signals and start overeating. This leads them to regain weight which they lost while dieting.

Some Other Findings of the Study
Researchers found that doing exercise minimized the increase in the development of new fat cells. These new fat cells appear in the early phase of the relapse process when a sedentary lifestyle is followed. This cells enhances the storage capacity on the abdominal area.

Conventionally, the fat cells are pre-determined by genetics, than being regulated by lifestyle or diet. Hence, this new research about effect of exercise is a path-breaking finding. This will prove that exercise can prevent the development of new fat cells early in the relapse period.
