What does quitting cold turkey mean?

Quitting cold turkey is one of the most popular ways to quit smoking. It simply refers to quitting all at once. There is no gradual reduction in the number of cigarettes smoked a day but a complete stop on a pre-decided date. The biggest benefit of this technique of quitting is that it is done at once due to which there is no postponement on completely stopping as happens in gradual reduction. Many have tried this technique with great success.

Although this technique is very popular and has a high rate of success, there are some things to keep in mind. The most important thing is to be informed. You need to do enough research into the method of quitting as well as the nature, severity and duration of withdrawal symptoms. This is important as you will be mentally more prepared to face these and still stick to your resolve of quitting.

Other than this most important factor, there are some other things that you would need to keep in mind when you are planning to quit using this method.

Some general tips when quitting cold turkey

    • The very first thing after you have done your research is to write down your reasons for quitting. You need to make sure that they are strong enough to make it easier to stick to your resolve.
    • Once this is done, the next step is to make your surroundings cigarette-free. Throw out cigarettes from your home, car and any other places to have better control over cravings.
    • Every time you resist from buying a cigarette, make sure you save that money. At the end of the month, you will know how much money you have saved which can motivate you to stay quit.

Once you have followed these steps and quit, the next most important step is to stay quit. This is where the problem arises if you have successfully quit. The first few days when you have withdrawal symptoms can make your resolve about quitting weak and you may go back to smoking. This normally happens a few times for most before they can quit. So do not lose heart if you slip up and have a puff. Go back and quit again and make your resolve stronger.
