Drug addiction and drug abuse have become rampant at school and on the streets. Most of the incidences of drug abuse are true but some are not. Do not be fooled by the ads made by the drug dealers. Instead, know the facts about painkillers and stay away from them.

    Facts about Painkiller Abuse

According to a fact sheet given by the Drug Enforcement Administration, 2.5 million Americans abused prescription drugs for the first time in 2007. Later in the same year, around 1000 people were killed because of Fentanyl, a prescription painkiller. American Medical Association stated that Fentanyl is 30 to 50 times more powerful than heroin. So, are painkillers helpful or are they a nightmare?

It is still a dilemma how our beloved King of Pop, Michael Jackson, died. Most of us know about the excessive doses of painkillers he was using. Dilaudid, Demerol and Vicodin are some of the dangerous painkillers that were used by Jackson everyday. It is a fact that none of these can ever be combined with any other drugs.

    Why Painkillers Get Addictive?

Most of the time, people take drugs to change something in their lives. Most common reasons are to relax, to relieve boredom, to rebel, to fit in and to experiment. Painkillers are very powerful drugs that interfere with our nerve signals which are perceived as pain. They simply mask the pain. Painkillers may produce short-lived elation, but they can become addictive very soon. After long-term usage of painkillers, the body adapts to the presence of the substance (drug), leading to physiological dependence. If the intake of the substance is stopped abruptly, it can lead to vomiting, dizziness, nausea, respiratory depression and confusion.

    How to Avoid Painkillers Abuse?

    • Adults and teenagers should become aware of actual benefits and effects of using painkillers.
