    Amoxicillin Allergy Reaction – Symptoms and Treatment

    Amoxicillin is an antibiotic drug in the penicillin family of drugs. It is used for treating a variety of conditions, including ear, bladder and sinus infections. It fights bacteria and bacterial infections and is known by the names Amoxil, Trimox, Dispermox, and Alphamox. In this article we give information on allergic reaction to amoxicillin.

    Allergic reaction to amoxicillin is seen as a side effect. It is observed that those who are hypersensitive to penicillin, and those having allergies like urticaria, asthma and hay fever are more likely to develop allergic reaction to amoxicillin.

    Symptoms of allergic reaction: Allergic reaction to amoxicillin is manifested as

    • Skin rash
    • Urticaria or hives
    • Itching
    • Unexplained swelling of the body
    • Swelling of the face
    • Swelling of throat, lips and tongue
    • Difficulty in breathing

    Allergic reaction to amoxicillin can manifest all of a sudden or start several hours, even days, after taking the medication. It is difficult for someone to know the exact course of the allergic reaction. In some rare cases, the allergic reaction to amoxicillin can lead to anaphylaxis, a potentially life threatening condition. Therefore, it is advisable to consult a doctor upon seeing any one of the above symptoms.

    Treatment of allergic reaction:

    Obviously one should stop the intake of amoxicillin on experiencing any of the symptoms. Consult a physician immediately. In mild cases of allergic reaction antihistamine medications are used for treatment. In severe cases epinephrine injections are administered under the supervision of a doctor. One should not try to treat this allergy by self-medication. One should strictly follow the physician’s advice regarding the medications.

    Physical Side Effects
    Rash or hives on the skin are some symptoms of allergy to amoxicillin.

    Respiratory Side Effects

    Breathing difficulty or shortness of breath after taking amoxicillin, can be signs of allergy.

    Side Effects on the Face
    Swelling of the face, throat, tongue or lips are tell-tale signs of amoxicillin allergy.

    Serious Side Effects
    These include severe skin blisters, high-grade fever, peeling of the skin and seizures.
