Are You Suffering From Feather Allergy?

suryaBy suryaSeptember 26, 2009002 Mins Read

Do you experience nasal congestion, sneezing, runny nose in the morning? Blame it on feather allergy! Feathers are predominantly used in pillows for the soft and comfortable feel they give. However, feathers can harbor dust mites and this can result in allergies. Encasing your feather pillow in an allergy-proof cover and washing your feather pillow can be helpful in preventing allergies to feather.

    What Causes Feather Allergy?
Experts believe that feather by itself is not responsible for allergies. However, feather can harbor dust mites. Dust mites are microscopic creatures which live by feeding on human skin flakes. They live in the bedding and gain entry into the pillows. The dust mite corpses and feces contain proteins which are responsible for triggering allergies. Moreover, pet dander and mold present in the feather pillows can also cause feather allergy.

    Symptoms of Feather Allergy:
Following are the symptoms of feather allergy:

    • Nasal Congestion
    • Sneezing
    • Watery and itchy eyes
    • Itchy skin
    • Rashes

If your allergy symptoms start in the morning and subside by mid-morning, you might be suffering from allergies due to feathers.

    Preventing Feather Allergy:
Here are some tips to prevent allergy to feather:

    • Use Allergy Pillow Cover: An allergy pillow cover shields the pillow against dust mites, mold, and pet dander. By just zipping the allergy pillow cover over your feather pillow, you can prevent your allergy.
    • Wash: Washing your feather pillows in hot water can kill the dust mites and keep you free from allergies.

Washing your feather pillows and encasing them in hypoallergenic covers is the best way to prevent feather allergy. You can also use allergy-proof bedding in your bedroom.

If you experience hay fever symptoms due to allergy to feather, use nasal decongestants, nasal corticosteroids, or anti-histamines to relieve the symptoms. If you experience feather allergy, do consult your allergist for proper diagnosis and treatment.
