    Bedbug Allergy – Prevention and Treatment

    Bedbugs are flat wingless insects which feed on the human blood. They infest the bedding and feed during the night. The bite of a bedbug can result in skin redness, itchiness and raised bumps. It can also result in swelling and severe skin reaction. To treat bedbug allergy, topical corticosteroids and antihistamines are used.

    What Causes Bedbug Allergy?
    While feeding, the bedbugs inject anticoagulants and anesthetic into the skin. The anesthetic released by the bedbugs results in an allergic reaction. Redness, hives, swelling, increased itchiness is experienced. In some cases, bed bug allergy can result in severe itchiness, redness and swelling.

    The reaction to the bedbug bite may not be apparent immediately. It might take days for the skin to develop the reaction. The skin redness, itchiness due to a bedbug bite may also last longer than a mosquito bite. The individual should not scratch or pick the affected area as it can lead to swelling and infection.

    How to Treat Bedbug Allergy?
    Here are few tips to treat the bedbug bite:

    Topical corticosteroids can help in reducing the itchiness and redness
    Antihistamines are helpful to reduce the allergic reaction
    Your doctor can also prescribe other corticosteroids to treat the allergy

    Prevention of Bedbug Allergy
    Here are a few tips to prevent the allergy:

    • Keeping the home clean and hygienic can prevent the infestation of bedbugs
    • Allergy-proof pillow covers can prevent the bedbugs from invading the pillows
    • Wearing pant and full-sleeved shirt can prevent the bedbug bite to a certain extent
    • Using of insect repellents can be helpful to prevent bedbugs
    • If the infestation is severe, it is better to consult a professional pest control companies for extermination

    Bedbugs, apart from allergy, can cause fatigue and sleeplessness. So, if you suspect your home is infested with bedbugs, ensure that you get rid of them as soon as possible.
