    What is Olive Oil Allergy?

    Olive oil is derived from seeds, fruit and leaves of the olive tree. It is applied topically to treat skin problems such as psoriasis, rashes and acne. It is also used to relieve migraine headache, constipation and several other problems. Though rare, olive oil can cause allergy. It can result in rashes, hives, itchiness of skin, diarrhea and nausea.

    People who have an allergy to the olive tree pollen are more likely to be allergic to olive oil. If a person is allergic to olive oil, he/she should completely avoid olive oil in food and should also avoid applying it topically.

    Symptoms of Olive Oil Allergy:

    • Rashes
    • Hives
    • Itchiness of skin
    • Nausea, diarrhea and abdominal cramps upon ingestion

    Allergy Testing:
    If you suspect you have an allergy to olive, do consult an allergist. He/she can conduct a patch test. The test involves placing a minute amount of olive oil on the skin. If a bump develops over the area, it can indicate an allergy.

    Treatment and Prevention for Olive Oil Allergy:
    For skin reaction such as rashes, redness, hives, your doctor might prescribe you topical corticosteroids.Anti-histamines are also helpful in treating the allergic reaction.

    To prevent olive oil allergy, one should avoid olive oil in all forms. As olive oil is used in food, it is important to avoid olive oil containing foods. Inquiring about the ingredients while eating out, reading the food labels while shopping, and keeping out the olive oil from the food while cooking is important.

    An allergy to olive oil, though rare, still exists. So, if you suspect that you have this allergy, do consult an allergist for allergy testing and treatment.
