    Traditional Kerala Ayurveda Treatments

    Kerala, known for its natural beauty and serenity, is considered as the place where Ayurveda is practiced with dedication and authenticity. Availability of medicinal plants and herbs in abundance makes Kerala a perfect place for the practice of Ayurveda.

    There are many unique traditional Ayurvedic treatments available with Kerala Ayurveda. These treatments are known for its curability and effectiveness. The month of Karkidakam โ€” a month according to the local Calendar, is considered as the month for curing diseases and rejuvenating the body.

    Uzhichil

    Uzhichil is called Abhyanga in Ayurvedic terminology, is a kind of whole body massage using medicated oils. This massage is done with hands or legs. This particular treatment has its roots in Kalaripayattu โ€” the traditional martial art of Kerala and Kathakali โ€” the classic art form of Kerala.

    Uzhichil is good for many diseases and disorders such as listed below:

    • It prevents premature ageing
    • Provides longevity
    • Nourishes skin
    • Rejuvenates body
    • Cures the ailments of muscles and joints
    • Strengthens mind and body

    Njavarakizhi

    Njavara is a variety of rise with medicinal qualities and it is cooked with decoction of medicinal plants and milk. This mix is made in to a bag called Kizhi and is used for massaging the body.

    Njavarakizhi is effective for treating conditions like:

    • Vata disorders
    • Neurological diseases
    • Weakness of the body
    • Degenerative conditions of joints
    • Recuperative period of diseases

    Ilakizhi

    Ilakizhi , as similar as Njavarakizhi, but here instead of Njavara rice leaves are used. Podikizhi is another type of massage similar to Ilakizhi and Njavarakizhi , uses medicinal powders.

    These two massages are effective against Vata and Kapha disorders like:

    • Swellings in the body
    • Spondylosis
    • Arthritis
    • Inflammations in the joints

    Thalam

    In this treatment, a paste of medicine is applied on the head. Medicines like Rasnadhi Choorna, Kachooradhi Choorna, and sandalwood are mixed with Ayurvedic oils and applied on the head.

    This treatment is effective for conditions like:

    • Insomnia
    • Headache
    • Mental disorders
