The Bates sunning method mainly focuses on restoring functional, healthy and normal use of the eyes. It is an alternative therapy which aims to secure relaxation of the mind and then the eyes. We all know that the sun is the source of life. You can reap benefits from the sun by simply letting the sun shine on your closed eyelids. Follow this step for about half a minute. The sunlight energizes your eyes.William Horatio Bates, M.D., (1860-1931) discovered the Bates Method. He attributed most of the eye problems to eye strain. He had a strong feeling that glasses were harmful and unnecessary.

    Sunning: The Technique
Sunning can be easily done with the help of a lamp because the light source is controllable and constant. You can use a desk lamp as it is the second best alternative to the sun. The best lamp is equipoise, also known as anglepoise, which can be directed to different angles. You should select a 60 or 100 watts bulb.

You should always sit somewhere where you can palm easily after sunning. Also, it is important that you should be able to direct the light source straight at your face.

    Sunning: Keep your eyes closed
The first step is to close your eyes and slowly direct the light to your face. If you are facing any discomfort, then it means that the light is too bright and too close initially. You should look out for any sign of strain or pain surfacing in the muscles around the eyes. So, try to get acclimatised to the light and then bring the light closer.

    Think of an Imaginary Horizon
Try to imagine where your nose is pointing to and imagine that you are staring in the same direction. Remember to keep your eyes closed.

    Turn your head sideways
You should turn your head from one side to another gently. As you turn your head, each eye will go into the dark side or shade. You should do this head movement slowly and steadily. It usually takes about three seconds to move from left to the right or vice versa.
