    Eye Strain

    Eye strain causes a dull, aching sensation behind and around the eyes that can gradually result in headache. It can be experienced as tightness, dull pains, burning, watering, sharp pains, double vision, headaches, blurring and other sensations. It may give painful feeling or fatiguing to focus the eyes. Eyes can usually strain when you overuse them for activities requiring precise, close focus, such as reading book or computer work. Wearing improper lens also cause strain. This article gives some of the important tips to reduce eye strain.

    Herbs which help to reduce the strain

    • Take eyebright in tea or capsule form. It can reduce the strain. This tea can be also used to rinse the eyes.
    • In addition or alternative to eyebright you can use goldenseal.
    • Important note: Do not use goldenseal during pregnancy. Do not take it for more than one week when used on daily basis.

    Recommendations

    • When your eyes strain, lie down and close your eyes. Take a cold compress and place it over the eyes. Try to relax for ten minutes or more. Replace the compress with a fresh one if necessary. This helps to relieve discomfort.
    • Take some preventive measures to avoid eye strain. When you read a book for long time, stop for a while in between and focus on a distant objects, look at something out of the window or across the room. It gives some rest to your eyes and reduces strain.
    • Use protective screen. Place a protective screen on the video terminal to cut glare and radiation.
    • Get sufficient sleep. Fatigue promotes eye strain.
    • Talk to your eye care professional immediately if the pain is severe and comes on suddenly. Especially if vision is disturbed or the pain accompanied by vomiting and nausea, it can be sign of an acute glaucoma attack.
