According to a non-profit organization in the U.S., Prevent Blindness America, it is estimated that around 50,000 people lose their vision every year. Also, around 80 million Americans are at a high risk of developing eye diseases which may finally lead to low vision and blindness. Many of the eye diseases like dry eye disease, glaucoma, cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) are preventable.

Improve Your Eyesight — A Few Tips

    • Yogurt and blueberries for breakfast — One of the richest source of antioxidants is blueberries. According to a research published in the Archives of Ophthalmology, it was found that people who ate the fruit in large amount were least susceptible to develop age-related macular degeneration (ARMD). This disease is the main reason for blindness in old age. Hence, you can have yogurt with a cup of blueberries for breakfast.
    • Spinach twice a week — Eat spinach twice a week. It can be either steamed or quiche spinach. You can also try Tuscan spinach, which is simply suateed in olive oil with raisins and garlic. According to various studies, it was found that leutin may minimize the risk of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.
    • Use red onions instead of yellow onions — Quercetin, an antioxidant is largely present in red onions than in yellow onions. This antioxidant is believed to protect your eyes against cataracts.
    • Keep the computer screen just below your eye level — This will make your eyes close slightly as you stare at the computer screen. This minimizes the risk of dry eye syndrome and fluid evaporation.
