    Itchy Eyes – Causes and Treatment

    Allergies, pink eyes or conjunctivitis can result in itchy eyes. It gives an sensation of itch and urge to scratch the eye. This article gives information about some causes and treatments of itchy eyes.

    Causes and Treatment of Itchy Eyes

    • Non washed eyes — If the fat in the corner of the inner eye produced from the oil gland is not washed properly in the morning can cause itchiness. Sweat from the hands or face while rubbing eyes can also be the cause.
    • Foreign Body — Any foreign particle or dust falling in the eye can result in intense itching and watery eye. You can take out the foreign object carefully using a cotton stick.
    • Aggressive gases and fluids — Fluids like acids, solvents or vinegar should be removed immediately from the eye by washing the eye with lukewarm water. It can also clean itchy eyes affected with smoke or irritant gases.

    Mostly allergies in the eye can cause itchiness. It does not result in redness of eyeball.

    Following are some treatment options for itchy eyes related to allergies:

    • You can take medicines called antihistamines.
    • Apply cool compresses.

    Following are treatments for itchy eyes related to pink eye:

    • Do not touch or rub your eye. Wash your hands regularly in order to avoid spreading the infection.
    • Use warm compresses to reduce discomfort.
    • Using sun glasses can help to protect the eyes against dust, wind and pollen.
    • Regularly blink your eyes, take breaks when working on a computer or reading.
    • Clean your eye with a warm moist cloth or wash them with cool water.
    • Adults can use counter eye drops. Children should be taken to a health care professional to get the best treatment.
    • Your health care professional may prescribe antibiotic eye drops if the infection is bacterial.
    • To correct eyelid problems, sometimes you may need to undergo a surgery.
