Natural Remedies that Help Cure a Stye

suryaBy suryaOctober 26, 2007903 Mins Read

A stye is a bacterial infection on the edge of the eyelid in one of the oil-secreting glands. It is usually caused by the staphylococcus bacterium and should pass within three days.

Recurring styes can be a sign of a vitamin A deficiency. The body can use beta-carotenes to convert to this antioxidant nutrient, which is specific to the eyes and will help soothe and heal that organ’s mucus membranes.

Here are some ways through which will help you heal the stye.

    • Apply a clean warm (not hot) wet washcloth to the infected eye. Hold the compress there for five minutes, and repeat three or four times a day. The heat will draw the pus to the front of the sty, and it will break open and drain. (A sty generally will open and drain on its own within a few days, but the heat helps it do that sooner.) These compresses also increase the blood supply to the area, helping the body fight the bacteria.
    • Boil a handful of acacia leaves in two cups of water to make a decoction and apply it as compress on the eyelids
    • Wet a tea bag in very warm water and place it on the sty. Let it stay for a few minutes. When you do this you will find that the sty will usually shrink to half its size. The tannic acid in the tea seems to help.
    • Drink dandelion tea to rid the body of bacteria that can lead to sties.
    • Continue applying compresses a few times a day even after the stye drains.
    • Never squeeze or try to pop a sty; it will be painful and may make the infection worse.
    • Wash your hands after touching the eye with a stye or you can spread the bacteria to your other eye or someone else’s eye.
    • Rub the eye stye three times with a gold wedding ring. This may sound really funny but it does help reduce the stye to a great extent.
    • Dab on some castor oil several times throughout the day until the sty disappears.
    • You may need oral antibiotics if the stye is very large, abscessed or not responding to other treatment. So, consult your doctor immediately if you find something unusual.
    • Never share eye make-up, especially if you’re prone to getting styes
    • Contact lenses should not be worn while you have a stye.
    • If you are prone to stye, prepare a strong cup of burdock-seed tea every morning and take 1 tablespoon before each meal and 1 tablespoon at bedtime.

These remedies are safe to follow and help reduce the painful stye to a great extent.

OK I did the wedding band thing and within ten mins the stye reduced in size by half. Does anyone know what properties there are in gold that can actually have an effect like this? I am a a believer in the wedding band old wives tale now.

I have had 2 simultaneous Styes, the one before lasted 5 days and it turned really ugly. I dont know how many of these old wives tales actually help. My honest suggestion is, RUSH to a doctor if the swelling does not go after day 2…Moxiproxin seems to be a common cure..try it, with prescription ofcourse.
