    Obesity in the United States

    Obesity rates in the United States have gone through the roof in the past two decades. Today, more than 60 million adults and about nine million children are classified as being obese. Needless to say, obesity is dangerous for one’s health.

    Causes of Obesity
    It is caused when there is an energy imbalance which occurs when one consumes more calories than one burns. Environment and behavior are the leading causes of obesity. But, overweight and obesity can be changed and prevented.

    Obesity is Dangerous
    Obesity increases the risk of contracting many diseases such as breathing problems, sleep apnea, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, stroke, dyslipidemia, hypertension, diabetes, heart disease and even some types of cancers.

    How to Diagnose Obesity
    There are many ways to tell if a person is obese. Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most common method. BMI is the calculation of a person’s body mass after taking into account his/her height and weight. It is an accurate measure of one’s body fat. Other methods include computed tomography, MRI, ultrasounds, waist circumference and evaluating skin fold thickness.

    Reasons for the Obesity Epidemic
    These include genetic, environmental and behavioral reasons. Today pre-packaged foods, soft drinks and fast food restaurants are more prevalent than 20 years ago. Grocery stores also stock more food items. People are consuming more portions of fatty fast food and snacks. And, they are not able to burn them off. Technology has eliminated the need for rigorous physical activity. People are using cars, instead of walking or biking. Televisions, computers, dishwashers and elevators are also making the common man more sedentary.

    Physical Exercise is Important
    Do vigorous physical activities daily to ward off or reduce obesity. Some strenuous activities include aerobics, sports, dancing, skating, swimming, biking, brisk walking, waiting tables, yard work, gardening, washing windows and washing floors. Physical activity controls weight and also reduces the risk of contracting colon cancer, high blood pressure and diabetes.
