How Can You Handle a Quit Smoking Relapse?

Quitting smoking is not an easy job. The longer you have been smoking, that much more difficult it would be for you to quit. That is because the longer you smoke, that much greater is the physiological and psychological dependence on nicotine.

Because of this, most people do not succeed in quitting the first time they try to do so. They succeed in giving it up but are unable to keep it away and end up smoking again. This is a very difficult stage and can sometimes be very demotivating to addicts who want to really quit. They get discouraged as they feel that they have failed to quit and that there is no point trying again.

How can you handle a quit smoking relapse?

But the fact is that almost all smoking addicts go through this phase. It is not unusual to take multiple attempts to actually succeed in quitting smoking. But what do you do when you get a relapse is what is important to know and remember.

The first and foremost thing to do is to accept the fact that it is your mistake that you gave in to your craving and smoked. If you do not do this, you will find it difficult to stay away as every time you will find someone or something else to blame for your smoking. That is sure to make you keep smoking without feeling much guilt for it.

As soon as you accept responsibility for the fact that you smoked, you will feel guilty. Even more importantly, you will feel responsible for yourself. Once this happens, think of that one strong reason that made you decide to quit for good. If you accept it as your mistake, this reason will be strong enough for you to try and quit and stay quit again and again till you are able to give up the habit for good.

A very important thing is also to be able to figure out what triggers off a craving to smoke in you. Till the time you are able to control your cravings enough to refuse a smoke, try and stay away from these triggers. This will make it easier and better for you to quit.

As long as you can keep up the strong will power with which you decided that you will quit no matter what, you will be able to get over your addiction, quit smoking and stay quit.
