    Smoking Marijuana and Breastfeeding

suryaBy suryaAugust 11, 2010112 Mins Read

Marijuana is a commonly used drug in society. Surveys reveal that more than 70 million Americans aged over 12, admit to having used marijuana at some point. About five million U.S. citizens smoke marijuana once a week at least.

Marijuana use in large doses can reduce milk supply in mothers and lead to growth delays and sedation in babies. Currently, recommendations for marijuana use during breastfeeding are similar to smoking cigarettes: Reduce the smoking amount, continue breastfeeding and most importantly do not expose the baby to second-hand smoke.

    Marijuana While Breastfeeding
Marijuana reduces milk production in the mother’s body. Mothers who smoke marijuana while continuing to breastfeed, affect the baby, as the infant can show signs of poor feeding habits, weakness and sedation. Thus, babies become lethargic and weak. This is a grave concern, which should be remembered by mothers who wish to smoke marijuana.

    Marijuana’s Effects on the Mother
Mothers who smoke marijuana become deeply hallucinogenic, which can affect their ability to care for the baby. After the drug-induced high disappears, the mother may fall into a deep asleep, preventing her from taking caring of her baby.

    Marijuana’s Effects on the Baby

    • Babies who are exposed to marijuana smoke and breast milk, suffer a greater risk of dying from SIDS, which is also known as cot death.
    • Babies who imbibe breast milk with marijuana, are likely to test positive if urine test is done.
    • Babies are exposed to marijuana twice: through breast milk and second-hand smoke.
    • Marijuana may damage genetic material and brain cells.
    • Street drugs such as marijuana are often contaminated with other substances or drugs, which can also impact babies.
    • Marijuana in breast milk can alter the baby’s brain cells.
    • A study revealed that babies that drank breast milk with marijuana, experienced delay in motor development in their first year.
    • Babies exposed to marijuana may thus suffer long-lasting and serious effects.
