    Persistent Cough – What are the Causes and Symptoms of Persistent Cough?

    Cough that becomes or remains chronic is called persistent cough. This is an indicator of some underlying respiratory infection. Most people experience sleepless nights. Stomach pain and fatigue. Fact is that persistent cough causes discomfort and also interferes with the lifestyle of a person. Abrupt exhalation causes exhaustion and weakness.

    Causes of Persistent Cough:
    Dry and persistent cough is a signal of an upper respiratory tract infection. The following are some causes of persistent cough.

    • Asthma: This is characterized by chest tightness, persistent cough and recurring periods of wheezing. Persistent cough is one of the symptoms of asthma.
    • Common Cold: Almost everyone might have suffered from cold fever and persistent cough. Common cold is the most common infectious disease.
    • Pneumonia: This is an inflammation in lungs which affects alveoli. Persistent cough is another common symptom of pneumonia. Other symptoms include fever, shortness of breath and chest pain.
    • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease: This is a reflux of stomach acids up to esophagus. This causes coughing and shortness of breath.
    • Tuberculosis: This is a contagious disease that spreads through air and mostly affects lungs. Persistent cough is the most common symptom of tuberculosis.
    • Allergies: Pollution made people susceptible to various allergies. Persistent cough is also caused if any micro-organism is inhaled through nasal passage.

    Symptoms of Persistent Cough:
    Persistent cough is sometimes due to allergic reaction to something that is environment or something ate. This also indicates some serious problems. Following are some symptoms of persistent cough.

    • Chronic Bronchitis: This is persistent when a person excretes substantial amount of phlegm or mucus. This condition lasts for long periods.
    • Chronic Cough: This is the common symptom of all cough conditions.
    • Asthma: This condition can be one of the causes. Wheezing and dry cough are the symptoms of asthma. Breathing problems is another telltale symptoms of asthma.
