adminBy adminMay 21, 2010012 Mins Read

Reflux is caused by the weakness in muscle at esophagus junction with stomach. Generally, sphincter or the muscular valve moves the food and stomach acid in upward direction – from stomach to larynx and esophagus. Sphincter opens for allowing food into stomach and then closes to keep stomach’s contents from coming back. If the stomach acid backs up into larynx (voice box), it is referred to as reflux laryngitis.

Always consult pharmacist or doctor before using antacids so that they do not have any side effects.

If these do not give relief from reflux, consult the doctor for medications. Health care provider may prescribe proton pump inhibitors like Prevacid and Prilosec. These reduce stomach acid. Reglan is another drug that increases digestive contractions to empty stomach.

Additionally, caffeinated beverages, alcohol and smoking should be avoided because these worsen the condition. Diet should contain less fat. Avoid large meals at dinner and also avoid having snacks at bedtime and after dinner. Do not sleep for long periods after having meals.
