    How Successful can Lisp Therapy Be in Children?

    The success of lisp therapy in children has been much debated over the years. There are different opinions with regards to the the difficulty in helping the child overcome the lisp, while a few argue about the amount of time required for curing a lisp. But, speech language pathologists do emphasize that diagnosing and exercising the therapy at an early age of four and half years can successfully help a child overcome the lisp.

    Lisp Therapy: Speech language pathologists have a certain idea in which they would like to cure lisps in young children. Taking a child who has a lisp problem to a speech pathologist  at an early age of two, three or four can help the pathologist observe the child closely for a period of time. There by, the pathologist is in a position to determine the exact time when he/she wants to start the therapy.

    A few aspects of the child that can help speech pathologists effectively cure lisps are-

    • early intervention at the age of at least four and half or five
    • child’s interest and cooperation in the therapy
    • role of the caregivers

    In case the above aspects work to perfection, there is every chance that almost 75 percent of the children with lisps can be cured effectively with a routine exercise ranging between 10-40 minutes.

    While the rest of them might not be cured either due to recurring lisps or due to a lack of interest shown by the child. Children who either opt out of the therapy or the ones who lack motivation are often difficult to treat and the possibility to cure them can be tough.

    Many children who suffer from lisps might not be ready for a lisp therapy at the age of five. It is alright for them to get treated at the age of seven or seven and half. But, the curing of the lisp may not be guaranteed while a few might respond positively. So, the success rate of lips therapy in children is only possible with an early intervention coupled with the child’s motivation.
