    Orthodox Fasting Recipes

    One can have fabulous sweets during fasting. There are some dietary restrictions in Greek orthodox fasting according to which the sweets can be prepared and served. This article gives a few orthodox fasting recipes which proved to be helpful while fasting.

    Grape Molasses Spice Cake – Petimezopita
    Molasses syrup is made from grapes and is a quite ancient ingredient that dates back to the Bronze age. It is available as grape must syrup or grape molasses in Greek or Middle East markets. It adds a unique flavor to the spice cake that tastes like a gingerbread and carrot cake.

    Baklava with Almonds and Walnuts (with olive oil)
    It is the famous Greek pastries and is fabulous. It is made with almonds, walnuts, cinnamon, olive oil and cloves.

    Sugared Almond Cookies — Kourabiethes Nistisimes
    Performing an orthodox fast doesn’t mean to give up taste and texture and doesn’t mean avoiding tasty foods. Kourabiethes are sugared shortbread cookies made with butter and eggs and is a lovely alternative in fasting.

    Halvas (Semolina Pudding) with Nuts and Raisins
    Halvas made with nuts, raisins, semolina and cinnamon is one of the popular Greek sweets with a delightful taste and grainy textured. It is prepared by placing in a mold and keeping on the stove. It can be served at room temperature.

    Orange Peel Spoon Sweet — Glyko Portokalaki
    This is the traditional Greek sweet which meets fasting guidelines. It gives more delightful taste when served with dessert sauce or any chocolate.

    Medallion Dessert Pancakes — Tiganites
    These are crispy, light and small sized pancakes and can be served with grape molasses, fruit preserves, maple syrup or honey. They can be served as a dessert or sweet snack.

    Sesame Honey Candy — Pasteli
    Pasteli is a favorite Greek candy made with sesame seeds and honey. This is the easiest, simplest, and oldest traditional sweet. It is an energy booster as well and can be taken along with tea.

    Sesame Cookies — Koulourakia Lathera me Sousami
    These are cookies made with olive oil. These are very common in Greece. They can be stored for about 2 months as they contain no eggs and butter.
