Trataka – The Third Eye Meditation

adminBy adminApril 5, 2019012 Mins Read

Trataka – also called Yogic gazing – is a practice where the gaze is fixed on an object for some time and then that object is visualized clearly with the eyes closed, as an inner image at the eyebrow center.

When you gaze at a picture, for instance, it is trataka. When you close the eyes and mentally remain aware of the picture, it is meditation with form (saguna dhyana). When omnipresence, purity, perfection, etc., present, the name and the form of the object of trataka will naturally merge [with That], and you enter formless meditation (nirguna dhyana). Together, this describes what is actually a Single Simultaneous Living Event. You are either enjoying It now as your conscious experience, or, through your curiosity, in the delightful process of allowing.

It has been discovered that there are seven chakras (or points of consciousness) in our body. These Chakras (literally Chakra means rings) are situated at different points in our body. Among these Chakras, the 6th Chakra is known as ‘ Aagya Chakra’ located between the eyebrows and is said to be the seat of the mystical “third eye”.

Trataka can be practiced on several objects, but the most popular and effective is trataka on a flame. This is because a flame (such as a candle flame) produces the best after-image that helps in easier visualization of the flame even when eyes are closed.

    Benefits

    • Trataka is believed to have a positive effect on several eye disorders such as weak eyesight. In addition, it improves the internal and external optic function.
    • It enhances the power of concentration and mental alertness.
    • Trataka is an excellent way as far as disconnecting oneself from the external noise and distractions is concerned. In yoga, it is said to also develop the “third” eye – the seat of intuition or that associated with “psychic” powers.
