What are the First Signs of Lung Cancer?

adminBy adminOctober 6, 2010002 Mins Read

Lung cancer causes more deaths when compared to the number of deaths caused by all other forms of cancer put together. Identifying the first signs of lung cancer can help in early detection and effective treatment. Tobacco smoking is the most common cause of lung cancer. Other causes include exposure to radiation, arsenic, asbestos, chromates, chloromethyl ethers, mustard gas and nickel.

Non-smokers are equally at risk of developing this deadly form of cancer. The early symptoms or first signs of lung cancer can be difficult to identify as they are subtle. In most cases, by the time lung cancer is detected it already spreads to healthy tissues and causes irreparable damage.

    First Signs
Common early symptoms and signs of lung cancer include:

    • Coughing up blood
    • Persistent cough
    • Wheezing
    • Shortness of breath
    • Chest pain
    • Loss of appetite
    • Weight loss
    • Recurring pneumonia or bronchitis

Consult your doctor immediately if you notice any of these symptoms. Some of the symptoms may indicate other underlying health conditions. A proper diagnosis and examination by your doctor would help in getting to the root of the problem.

    Secondary Signs
As the cancer spreads, secondary signs and symptoms are noticed. They include:

    • Difficulty in swallowing food
    • Weakness
    • High Fever
    • Change in voice (Hoarseness)
    • Changes in nails
    • Swelling of the face

Although most symptoms are noticed in the advanced stage, early detection of lung cancer would help in better treatment. Be on the look out for the symptoms mentioned above. If you are a smoker then quit smoking at once. You could still have a chance of living a healthy and longer life.

If lung cancer spreads to other body parts, it is referred to as ‘metastasizing’. It could affect your bones and vital organs. Signs and symptoms of this condition include:

    • Aching and sharp pain in the bone
    • Weakness
    • Numbness
    • Dizziness
    • Jaundice
    • Headaches
    • Numbness
    • Loss of sensation

Most patients dismiss these symptoms as nothing serious. Though the thought of these symptoms pointing to lung cancer may not be worth believing, it is always better to get your doubts cleared by your doctor or health care provider to be double sure.
